The Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University was made possible by Congressman Alan B. Mollohan who urged university officials to seek the designation of an official Challenger Learning Center learning site.

A member of United States House of Representatives Appropriations Committee and Chairman of one of its important subcommittees (Commerce, Justice and State, the Federal Judiciary and 17 related agencies, The Federal Judiciary and related agencies,  The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Small Business Administration (SBA) are among the subcommittee’s jurisdiction.) Mollohan has been a strong supporter of initiatives to improve ways of teaching and learning math, science, and technology.  His interest and support was a key in making the Wheeling Jesuit University Center for Educational Technologies building.
  
Congressman Mollohan’s support of Challenger Learning Centers nationwide and of Wheeling Jesuit facility has drawn significant praise.  In honor of his key role in the development of the facility, the core components of the Wheeling Jesuit Challenger Learning Center have been named in his honor- The Alan B. Mollohan Mission Control and Spacecraft Simulator.
